Private Actions

Pressing the Square button near a town will let you enter into a Private Action. There, you can talk to (and pickpocket!) your characters. However, many times you will see one-time Private Actions: scenes that only appear once in the game. Usually you will be given a choice in these scenes, and what you choose affects the Emotional Levels of the characters (see Emotional Levels for more info on that). Sometimes you'll get items, and some PAs are necessary to unlock secrets or start side quests.
