Magic User

Ah... Syous The Magic User, like they used to call him back in the first edition of D&D, altough people just refer to him as The Mage. Or demi-god. 'cause that's what he is. He's besically what you'd expect from a guy dressed in a black robe: he can use every Arcane Spell to devastating effect, often clearing the screen of enemies with one spell, but gets beat up so fast, it's not even funny. The differences between the two mages you can choose between are their appearance and both have two unique spells which the other does not.

Obviously, the Mage is best used in a party filled with meatshields Fighters and Dwarves, so they can take the hits while the Mage steals all the XP with area-attack spells without the fear of getting harmed. That should piss off your friends pretty well. He is most useful with bosses tough. A couple of castings of Conjure Elemental or Meteor Storm will make short work of just about any boss. And you can annoy your friends by casting Magic Missile when the boss is almost dead, thus getting the finishing blow >:) Since you start out with a pair of wands (Fire and Cold), you can use those to your advantage if you find yourself with no more spells to cast. Note that you cannot use a bow or throwing hammers either, due to your low strenght. Daggers you can handle. It's an effective strategy in a boss fight to cast Project Image and then proceeding to stab the boss, as you can perform the stab without danger to yourself, and with so many stabs getting in, you'll have a chance to cause the crippling critical.

Default Equipment:

Staff of Striking, Mage Robe, Dagger x4, Burning Oil x3, Wand of Fire, Wand of Cold

Magic User Differences

- Syous the Mage wears a black robe. He casts Conjure Elemental as a level 5 spell and Meteor Swarm as a level 9 spell

- D'Raven the Mage wears a green robe and a pointy hat. He casts Cloudkill as a level 5 spell and Power Word: Kill as a level 9 spell. Select him by pushing START instead of A when selecting your character.

Note that if you skip a boss, you may not undergo a level raise, but joining in mid-game usually ignores the fact.

Stuff to look for:
- A staff that increases your spell power (Wizardry or Magical Power comes into mind..)
- Mage Hat to offset his low HP
- Earrings for Spell Power
- Rod of choice to enchance your elemental attacks
- Any extra Rings of Curing

Strengths
- Spells spells and more spells!
- Grants access to FINAL STRIKE
- Can make himself invincible
- Good evasive maneuvre
- Wands allow some melee support even after spells have run out
- Smash attack has crippling damage capability
- Project Image + Stabbing can be an effective boss strategy

Weaknesses
- Lowest HP in the game
- Cannot equip a shield
- Dependant on spellcasting
- No attack capabilities whatsoever outside dagger's critical hit chance
