Ultima Versions
Ultima is the beginning of one of the most successful RPG series ever. Originally released as "Ultima" for the Apple II in 1980, it saw a major re-release under the title "Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness" in 1986.

The very first version of Ultima. Technically not impressive but historically a ground-breaking version. |

Apple II/gs |
Year: 19?? |
I haven't played this version, but from what I've seen and read about it, this version features better graphics as any other Ultima 1 version (with the exception of the versions for Japanese computer systems) and a full musical score.

Atari 400/800 |
Year: 1983 |
The only version that is actually based on the first Apple II version and not falling in the time of remakes. Considering its age, it is still an impressive piece of software and highly playable. |

Commodore 64 |
Year: 1986 |
Another fine version. Graphics are neat, the loading times are bearable and playability is very high. If it wouldn't be for the slightly better MS-DOS version, I'd recommend this one first. |

MS-DOS |
Year: 1986 |
In contrast to the very bad looking MS-DOS versions of Ultima 2 and Ultima 3, they used the 16 color EGA-palette for this conversion. The result is a very good looking version and since there are no loading times at all the gameplay is considerably faster than with the other homecomputer versions. If you don't have an Apple II/gs or one of the japanese computers - which is very likely - then you really should try this version. |

This version was released by the japanese publisher "Pony Canyon". While the game is still very similar to the remake of the western versions, the PC-98x1 version profits from better graphics and some music.
