Goldfish Warning!
Like most RPGs of this era, the first screen is spent naming your character. If you're playing the unaltered Japanese ROM, you'll have a limit of 4 characters. If you're playing my translation, you'll have a maximum of 8 characters. If you get lazy and decide to just enter no name, your character will be named "Nakayoshi" in the Japanese ROM or "Naka" in the translation. So pick a name (keeping in mind that your character is female), and move on with the game. |
You'll learn about the game's plot right away from the editor of Nakayoshi Magazine. Apparently, some bad guys headed by someone named Rakira has kidnapped the heroines of different worlds based on some manga, stolen those manga authors' favorite pens and taken Nakayoshi World's three Gold Gems. He gives you a Quartz that allows you to use magic, and sends you to Ms. Neko Nekobe, the author of Goldfish Warning!, who gives you a Cow Horn, her world's theme weapon, and a Transformation Wand, which allows you to transform into Wapiko, a character from Goldfish Warning! that can talk to animals. |
After talking to Ms. Nekobe, you'll be deposited in front of New Country Junior High, the main setting of Goldfish Warning! The school is on the right, and the barn's on the left. Keep in mind that if you transform into Wapiko right now, your HP will be drained as you walk, so I recommend just staying in your normal form for now. If you check out the barn, you'll see that four cows have escaped their pens. If you push them back into their pens you'll be rewarded. Might as well give it a shot, eh? The trick is to not push any of the cows into the fences where they get stuck. But if you do mess up just press the Start button to reset their position. Anyway, first, maneuver the far-left cow into the upper-left pen as shown. |
Now you'll want to push the far-right cow into the far-right pen, as shown. |
At this point, I like to push the remaining two cows into the open area in the lower part of the screen, then move them up to the upper pens one at a time. As long as you make sure to keep at least a square of space on all sides of the cows, you shouldn't have any problem. |
After you've done it, go ahead and talk to the man in the previous screen and he'll reward you with a bag of Potate brand potato chips. Now, if you want more chips, you can push the cows back into their pens again and get more, but it's not exactly necessary. When you've had enough here, move on to the school. |
There's plenty of stuff to find and do in the school. The first room you encounter is the infirmary, which can heal you for free if you want. Of course, you should only need healing if you've been running around as Wapiko, but I digress... The science room is another room on the first floor you can check out. You'll recognize it by a bony resident. Check out the skeleton and pluck out one of its bones, which you can use as a weapon. |
Also on the first floor is the home ec room, in which you can talk to the girl for chocolate-covered bananas. She'll keep forking 'em over, so you might as well keep talking to her until you have a maximum of 10 bananas. |
Also on the first floor is the music room. In here is a chest containing a Recorder, which is a rather weak weapon. Go ahead and pick it up if you want. |
On the second floor, you can find this room with Michael and Aoi, two characters from Goldfish Warning! in it. If you look in this bag, you can get another bag of chips for much less work than the cows in the barn were. |
Just past the room you picked up the bag of chips, you'll get attacked by a group of cows headed by Bad Ox, another Goldfish Warning! character. Looks like you can't advance any further for now... |
To get past Bad Ox, you'll need some feline assistance. In the far-south room of the second floor is a cat named Fosteel. If you talk to Fosteel in your normal form, you won't be able to understand all the meowing, but your Wapiko form will be able to decipher it. Talk to Fosteel and he'll be able to knock Bad Ox out of your way allowing you to continue on your way. |
Keep continuing along your way until you reach the final room in the hallway. This is the principal's office, and he's a cool dude with cool antennae. He's so cool, in fact, that he gives you a piece of Jade just for talking to him! |
After talking to the principal, he will let you into the room behind his office. In here is Chitose, one of the main characters of Goldfish Warning! She will give you a bus pass and tell you Wapiko is at City Academy, her old school. She lets you know that Aoi, another student, can give you an invitation there. |
You may have talked to Aoi before, but if you try to find him now, you'll discover that he's taken off to the town. So instead, head to the room just to the left of the principal's office. In it you'll find Gyopi, Chitose's magical flying goldfish, and Shu, another student. Talk to Shu first to get 1000 Peach. |
If you talk to Gyopi, you'll find out that he's hungry, and he wants some Potato Chips, his favorite food. You probably already have some chips, as you can get them from Wapiko's bag or the barn. If you already grabbed and ate Wapiko's chips, you'll have to get some more from the barn. Either way, if you have some in your inventory, Gyopi will take them from you and teleport you outside. |
Since you got a bus pass from Chitose, you can take the bus to the city if you're ready. Make sure you have no unfinished business at the school, then head south of the school to the bus pass to get transported to the city. You'll find that the city is guarded by a chicken named Peeko. If you're in your regular form, you won't be able to get past, but if you're in your Wapiko form, Peeko will join up with you and let you enter the city. |
There's plenty of stuff to do in the city. You can buy yourself new weapons or gems if you want, fight enemies (they all look like little M&Ms in this town), or just explore and talk to people. The first thing you should do, however, is visit the building in the southwest corner of town, near where you first arrived. In it is this guy, the God of Happiness, who'll give you a Flan for free! |
Next, I recommend heading up a screen and checking out the house here. In it, you'll find an enemy guarding a chest. Inside the chest is the Ring, which is a useful accessory that lets you transform without it draining your HP. Once you obtain it, you can wlak around as Wapiko as much as you want without it draining your HP at all. |
Also, in the northwest corner of town, if you walk behind this building, as shown, you will stumble. If you search the ground where you fall, you will find Golf Balls, which can be used as a weapon! Every chapter has one spot where you can trip and pick up something, so try to find them all! |
And finally, in the southeast corner of town is another house guarded by an enemy. This time, the chest contains 500 Peach, which is a good chunk of money for this portion of the game. |
Now to find Aoi. He's hanging out in the pawn shop in the north-central part of town. Talk to him and he'll gladly give you an invitation to City Academy, along with a bus pass. Once you've talked to Aoi, you can go to City Academy by using the bus pass south of the southeast corner of town, but keep in mind you can't return to town, so make sure you take care of any shopping or other business you have before you catch the bus. |
When you arrive at City Academy, you'll hand over your invitation, then Peeko will fly off. Don't bother following, just head into the school itself. City Academy is pretty straightforward, just make your way up as far as you can. If you need to heal, there's an infirmary on the first floor that can heal you for free. The last room in the school is locked, but the penultimate room isn't. Inside this room, you'll have to fight two more characters from Goldfish Warning!, Katou and Tanakayama. Defeat both of them, and you'll receive a key to the final room in the school, Yurika's room. |
Inside the final room in the school is Yurika, Chitose's rival. She's not too tough, but keep in mind that Ice and Lightning magic has no effect on her, so be sure to choose Fire magic. Once you defeat her, she'll open up a trap door and implore you to jump down it. Despite what logic would normally dictate, go ahead and listen to her and jump down it. |
Beneath the trap door, you will find a maze beneath City Academy. Of course, I use the term maze loosely, as it's quite easily navigated. All there is to do here is defeat the single enemy here, grab the treasure, which happens to be the first Gold Gem, then make your way to the exit. |
After exiting from the maze with the Gold Gem, you can make your way to the shed east of the school. Just fight your way in, then defeat the single enemy found inside the shed. This will somehow unlock the cell where Wapiko and apparently Peeko are held in. |
Also in that cell, you'll find Ms. Nekobe's pen. You'll teleport back to her, she'll take your Cow Horn and your Transformation Wand, and then she'll whisk you off to the next chapter. Get used to this treatment, as this will happen at the end of all the other chapters too. In any case, it's time to tackle the Pocket Park chapter! |
