Character Classes

NES | GBC
Note: Character's stats are determined by their personalities. You can make the starting personalities of any character by the distribution of seeds (other than the Hero, who's personality is determined through the Personality Test), and you can also alter people's personalities via books found throughout the world.
HERO
The Hero is, of course, the Hero of your quest. They have well rounded stats, and can learn quite a few useful spells. Only the Hero can equip the most powerful equipment in the game. The Hero is also the only character who can't change classes at the Dharma Shrine.
WARRIOR
The Warrior is the strongest attacker in your group. They can use some of the most powerful weapons and armor, but can't use any magic spells. They have high strength and vitality rates that make them great additions to the party.
FIGHTER
Fighters are almost as strong as warriors, but can't use the powerful armor. Fighters tend to wear lighter armor, and their agility is much higher than that of a warrior. Despite their strength, they don't use many weapons; a Fighter can get buy with just a claw, or even their own fists.
DEALER
The Dealer is one of the most upgraded characters in Dragon Warrior III. Despite being nearly useless in the original, he now has two spells; Excavate is an advanced form of the basic search command that almost always brings up some gold or a small item, and sometimes brings up rarer items. YellHelp randomly calls for a Innkeeper, a Merchant or a Priest to help you where ever you might be.
CLERIC
Clerics are the White Mages of Dragon Warrior III. They have strong curative magic, and can also use weapons and armor that are quite powerful. Their equipment selection is much more vast than that of the mage, especially at the beginning of the game. This, along with their strong curative magic, makes them very valuable to your party.
MAGE
As the cleric is the White Mage of Dragon Warrior III, the Mage is the Black Mage. Much like Black Mages, Mages can't use very strong equipment, and they gain HP very slowly. However, they gain MP very, very quickly. Their strong spells like Blaze and IceBolt can keep them alive early in your quest, so that they can get stronger spells like BlazeMost, Explodet, and BeDragon.
JESTER
The Jester is seemingly the most useless class available. Their one spell, Whistle, merely calls enemies to fight with. However, they hold a secret... If you can level a Goof-Off up to level 20, they can turn into a Sage without the Book of Satori!
SAGE
The Sage is a combination Mage and Cleric; they can use both offensive and defensive magics! They can also use much stronger weapons or armor than either the cleric or the mage, making them the most powerful wizards in the game! There are only two ways to get a Sage in your party; one is to obtain the Zen Scroll in Garuna Tower or in Rimuldar and hold it in your inventory as you change classes. The other method is described under the Jester's profile.
THIEF
Thieves have high agility, and have the ability to steal during battle. Their few spells are all very helpful, from Smell, which tells you how many treasures are left in the area, to TipToe, which lowers your random encounter rate. They are also the only character class that can use some of the powerful whips in the game, which attack not only a single monster, but an entire enemy group!
