Yoshi

Yoshi isn't actually the character's name, but since the character is named by the player, it'll have to do. Also, the color of the Yoshi you get varies among 7 different possibilities (go to the Misc. Section to find out how to decide the color of your Yoshi). Anyway, Yoshi hatches from an egg Mario saves from Mr. Hoggle, the hot dog vendor in Glitzville. Yoshi proceeds to follow Mario around, calling him Gonzales, for the remainder of his adventure. By pressing Y, Mario can hop on Yoshi and ride him around quickly. By pressing A while riding Yoshi, Mario can cross gaps that are too wide for him to jump across.

Yoshi's Moves:

Initial Moves:
Ground Pound 0 FP Yoshi floats over to an enemy and stomps on them. Execute a Timed Hit by pressing R rapidly as Yoshi is floating to the enemy. The closer you get to filling the gauge, the more times Yoshi will stomp. Execute a Stylish Move by pressing A just before Yoshi drops onto the enemy. You can execute a second Stylish Move by pressing A just as Yoshi lands on the ground after attacking.
Gulp 4 FP Yoshi swallows the first enemy and spits it out into the second enemy. Execute a Timed Hit by holding R until the gauge is full and the star is lit up. Then release R. If you don't execute a Timed Hit, the attack will fail. Execute a Stylish Move by pressing A just as the gulped enemy hits the second enemy (or the ground if there's not an enemy behind it).
Super Rank Moves:
Mini-Egg 3 FP Yoshi lays several eggs, then throws them at the enemies, which causes damage and "Shrink" status. Execute a Timed Hit by pressing A when the cursor hits the stars as the gauge fills up. Every time you successfully do this, Yoshi will lay an extra egg. Execute a Stylish Move by pressing A after Yoshi throws the final egg. You'll want to hit A just as the egg hits the apex of its arc.
Ultra Rank Moves:
Stampede 6 FP Yoshi summons several Yoshis to stampede all enemies. Execute a Timed Hit by alternately pressing L and R. The closer you get to filling the gauge, the more times the Yoshis will attack. Execute a Stylish Move by pressing A just as Yoshi is whistling to summon the other Yoshis.

Yoshi's HP & Attack Power:

Initially:
10 HP Ground Pound: 1 HP (up to four times for a Timed Hit)
Gulp: 4 HP
Super Rank:
20 HP Ground Pound: 1 HP (up to five times for a Timed Hit)
Gulp: 5 HP
Mini-Egg: 1 HP (+Shrink Status)
Ultra Rank:
30 HP Ground Pound: 1 HP (up to six times for a Timed Hit)
Gulp: 6 HP
Mini-Egg: 1 HP (+Shrink Status)
Stampede: 1 HP (up to six times for a Timed Hit)

Yoshi's Advantages
Yoshi can easily attack airborne enemies and enemies in the back row with Ground Pound.
Gulp pierces defense, and can attack enemies that are otherwise unattackable.
Yoshi can shrink enemies by using Mini-Egg.
Stampede is a great attack against groups of enemies with 0 Defense.
Yoshi is ridiculously convenient if you like to travel around quickly.
Yoshi's Disadvantages
None of Yoshi's attacks damage enemies with Defense higher than 0 other than Gulp.
Ground Pound cannot be used on spiky or fiery enemies.
