Enemy Types

The different enemies in Star Ocean are nearly always part of a specific type. All types have their own attacks and attack patterns, so describing one of them usually describes them all. This is meant to be a helper page to the Enemies page; refer back to it for specific stats on each enemy.

Angel (Angel Knight, Gabrielle, Seraphina, Star Seraph)
Difficulty: Hard
These monsters are generally very nasty, possessing high HP and attack power. They can build a little energy barrier around themselves; any character caught in it will definitely be stunned and (unless their stats are very high) probably die before they can get out of it. They can also cast spells sometimes. Gabrielle in particular is a quite difficult bonus battle; she can kill any character up to about level 100 in one hit!

Arrakora (Arrakora)
Difficulty: Medium
A kitty-eared magician; basically a Cleric that can throw a long-range scythe-shaped thingy. High HP, but not much to worry about, not at the levels you need to reach the spot where they appear. ^^;

Axe (Doom Axe, Dragon Axe, Lizard Axe, Robber Axe)
Difficulty: Medium
They have only one attack, but it has fairly long range and they can shoot them off extremely quickly! Having a high Flip skill is a good way to get around these guys.

Boss
Just a generic category for bosses whose strategies are discussed in the walkthrough.

Bug (Assassin Bug, Dragonfly, Grave Bit, Killer Bee)
Difficulty: Easy/Medium
They usually can't hit very hard (except for Grave Bit). The only annoying thing is their ability to fly out of weapons' reach and dive at you. If you keep attacking them they usually don't get a chance to hit, though.

Bunny (Cuniculus, Little Bunny, Pretty Bunny)
Difficulty: Easy
Generally quite weak; their attacks have medium range but don't hit very hard.

Caveman (Berserker, Cannibal, Savage, Velcant)
Difficulty: Easy/Medium
Usually they're so slow that they don't pose much of a problem. If they do manage to connect, though, they'll do mucho damage and knock you backwards. They can also throw stones. If you have any amount of speed you can overwhelm them, though. They tend to have high HP.

Cleric (Acolyte, Cleric, Draw Rector)
Difficulty: Easy/Medium
They sometimes cast spells that can heal the enemy party, so it's a good idea to get them quickly. Other than that they don't pose much of a threat, although they can attack surprisingly quickly if they decide to.

Devil (Killer Whisper, Mini-Devil, Spend Devil, Whisper)
Difficulty: Medium/Hard
They're quite fast and can hit hard if they actually decide to, but usually they just hang back and cast fire spells. They tend to have high HP, so getting rid of them quickly isn't much of an option. Gang up on them if you can.

Eagle (Carla Eagle, Cockatrice, Peryton, Stage)
Difficulty: Medium/Hard
Besides for being able to fly above your attacks' ranges (spells still work), these birds have an attack that goes across the whole scren and spreads quite wide, as well as doing nasty damage. What's more, they can usually stone/paralyze you too! Luckily they don't appear in groups of more than two.

Eye (Demonic Eye, Dragon Eye, Medusa Eye)
Difficulty: Very Hard
Probably the hardest enemy type in the game. They can cast spells, but usually don't. They prefer to calmly roll over your entire party until they've all turned to stone. This happens depressingly frequently. They're surrounded by that little energy ring, so you can't really get close to them. But they move inexorably and fast, and don't bother hesitating. Get rid of them from a distance and as soon as you can, and equip Stone Charms if you have them!

Fat Bunny (Killer Rabbit, Punkponk, Saber Bunny, Vorpal Bunny)
Difficulty: Medium
They can jump around and avoid your attacks, their regular attack has a longer range than usual, and they can shoot out a little punch. Luckily, they're so slow (and usually weak) that it's easy to surround them and pound them into submission before they can jump all over you. High HP sometimes, but usually not much of a problem. Their attack power isn't too bad, either.

Giant (Gargantua, Giant, Hill Giant, Velcant Boss)
Difficulty: Medium/Hard
They have several moves, including a very strong regular attack, a large boulder throw, and a yell that can render everyone immobile for a second or two. First off, if you have the Star Guard on and he yells, you'll shoot out tons of sparks which can do major damage. 8-) Second of all, he's a bit faster and stronger than the Cavemen, so he's more of a threat. Try to get rid of him first in a fight if you can.

Grell (Grell, Otif, Petrogrell, Stroper)
Difficulty: Medium
They usually have medium to high HP and attack power. While their attacks don't vary much, they can be tough in that a) they can usually stone or paralyze you, and b) they can split into two monsters! If you let them do this too much, you can be surrounded very easily. They also have a longer-range attack, but they don't use it that often. Keep on 'em and don't give them a chance to split!

Knight (Armed Knight, Gladiator, Sargwen, Slayer)
Difficulty: Medium/Hard
They can throw out a spinning sword quite a ways - and then it comes back! This attack can be quite deadly, as it can hit two to four times easily; if your stats are low, you're cooked! They can also be fast and the later versions are smart, as well, staying away from you as they throw it. Soften them up with spells or long-range techs, then gang up on them.

Lady (Grim Flora, Mary, Pretty Bell, Priscilla)
Difficulty: Easy
Usually they're some of the weakest enemies in the spot you're in. They can cast some weak spells, but never anything to make them a pain.

Magician (Death Charona, Dora)
Difficulty: Easy
Yes, they can cast spells. That's about it. They're wimps. 8-)

Man-Shape (Duel-Form, Flak-Form, Mail Shape)
Difficulty: Hard
The problem with these guys is that they just gang up on you! Three or four is the norm, and sometimes you're surrounded as well! Some of them can shoot long-range attacks, others won't be harmed by physical attacks very well. Luck and going nuts is the best way to get rid of them; the surrounded-battles can be insane. Just keep wailing away, and try to have Milly in your party and as near the middle of the battlefield as possible.

Ogre (Cloud Ogre, Kobold, Kobold King, Ogre)
Difficulty: Easy
While quite fast, these guys are generally not very strong and have low defense. Not tough unless you're fighting them in the Arena by yourself.

Plant (Alraune, Ichel, Mandrake, Shadow Flower)
Difficulty: Easy/Medium
The only nasty attack they have (other than sometimes being able to stone/paralyze you) is a spore attack that can hit a group of allies and do major damage. It takes a while to pull off, though, so you can hit them out of it fairly easily most of the time. They drop Compounding herbs.

Robot (Aspitel)
Difficulty: Easy/Medium
The only thing these guys can do is shoot a long-range laser. A bit tough if they gang up in a group of four, but not too bad.

Rogue (Burglar, Boss Baird, Bushwhacker, Looter)
Difficulty: Easy or Very Hard
Yes, they're fast, but generally they're at such low levels that it doesn't make much difference. The Looter is a whole other story, being generally the hardest enemy in the game! All his stats are hugely high, meaning he can attack three times and kill you while your attacks can't even get off. High levels, strong, fast attacks, and powerful spells are the way to go in that battle.

Slime (Black Slime, Fat Fudd, Fudd, Slime)
Difficulty: Medium or Hard
They have two moves: a) shooting a bullet that travels across the entire screen length; b) splitting into two monsters! The earlier Slimes are weak enough to pose no problem, but the later ones can be quite nasty, with very high attack power and HP and splitting quickly. Go all out when you come up against them later in the game. (Note, though, that letting Slimes split and then beating them all is a great way to get experience!)

Spider (Arachmene, Black Widow, Evil Terrato, Scylla)
Difficulty: Hard
Well, spider-lady actually. She's incredibly fast; she can teleport around the battlefield, plus shoot long-range whirly thingies that do mucho damage. If you let her, she can also charge up a web attack that hits everybody for moderate damage. Her avoid stat and HP are usually quite high. Defense is usually low, though.

Thief (Bandit, Funny Thief, Lesser Assassin, Thief)
Difficulty: Easy
Usually a joke. They're quite fast, but usually very weak. Some of 'em can poison you, but that's the worst they can do.

Vampire (Death Terror, Dark Stalker, Lady Elvira, Succubus)
Difficulty: Hard
Very nasty! They can teleport around. They have two hurting attacks: A normal attack whereby they quickly surround themselves with spears which then disappear; that one's not bad if you stay away. The REALLY bad one is where they shoot spears straight into the air which then fall on you! The later Vampires can easily kill one or more characters with this attack, which they can pull off almost immediately. Luckily they never appear in more than groups of two. Your only chance is to have different characters tackle each one and keep 'em busy.

Witch (Elder Magius, Flood Sherry, Magius, Pyre Sherry)
Difficulty: Medium
Besides for casting strong spells, they also have one attack which can be deadly: They turn into an invincible whirlwind and blast around the battlefield. Thankfully they don't use this very often, and it takes a few seconds to charge up, too. If they pull it off, weak characters like Joshua and Milly can be instantly killed. Usually they're not much to worry about, but you might want to get rid of the later versions before they cast spells you're not equipped to deal with.

Wolf (Dire Wolf, Wolfhound, Pyre Beast, Shadow Beast)
Difficulty: Easy
Fast but usually weak. They have one howling move, though, that raises its attack power plus has a chance of dizzying all your characters. If you see one starting to do that, just hit him out of it.

Wolf-Shape (Hound-Form, Wolf Shape)
Difficulty: Easy/Medium
They don't have any special attacks except being able to attack powerfully and often. The Hound-Forms aren't much trouble, but the Wolf Shape bosses can be quite hard since they surround you and are way stronger. That fight's about as bad as the Man-Shape ones, so just go nuts and have Milly heal as often as she can.

Worm (Blood Worm, Fellworm, Sand Worm)
Difficulty: Easy
Fairly slow and weak, but they usually have high HP and sometimes can cause status problems. Also they tend to absorb some elementals.
