Forging: To upgrade any of the weapons, go to Watts when you get an orb, and for a price he'll forge you a better version of that weapon. Each level of a weapon has a higher attack power than its previous form, and usually new special attributes. The special attributes do not "stack." For example, the Herald Sword, which does extra damage against slimes and lizards, is upgraded to the Broad Sword, which deals extra damage to insects. The Broad Sword does not retain the Herald Sword's anti-slime and lizard attribute. Also, it costs more to upgrade a weapon the more you've already upgraded it. Observe:

Number of Orbs: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Cost to upgrade:
(to next level)
200GP* 400GP 800GP 1600GP 3000GP 6500 12500 25000
*the exception to this is that Watts will upgrade the Sword the first time for 100GP.

Watts can be found in the following locations:
Dwarf Village, with the Moogles (both before and after you reclaim their village), Matango, Kakkara, Todo Village, Empire Northtown, and so on, and so on. He can even be found in the middle of long dungeons like the Great Palace at times. What a guy.
