Defense
Defense is how many damagepoints are prevented in an attack. For example when a monster hits you for 88 damage, but you have a Plasma Shield, this damage will be reduced by 50 so only 38 damage will remain. This amound is absolute, there is no random factor. You always have the same specific bonus for every defense item you use.
Cost p/p is the amount of money paid per point of power/strength. The lower this value the better the weapon/defense relatively is for its price.
