Shadowrunners

Not only do you get to choose your Shadowrunner's Archetype, but you also have the option to be part of a team. Teams have numerous advantages over a single Runner. For one thing, triple the firepower-when you have a friend with a decent combat skill, you'll find a lot of enemies seem a lot easier to take down. Second, a Shadowrunner can use a medkit, patch, or Heal Wounds spell on a disabled comrade-which means you don't have to pay 10% of your credstick balance everytime you're reduced to 0% physical or mental health.

Third, your friend can make use of skills you cannot. Are you a Shaman? Hire a Decker to do your Matrix Runs for you. Are you a Samurai? Hire a Mage or Shaman to give you the benefit of magic. And a Decker can hire a couple of buddies to do the fighting, letting him concentrate his Karma distribution on his Computer skill.

Shadowrunners may be hired in one of two ways. The first is for a single Run-after the run ends you pay them a percentage of the payoff and they go back to where they were when you hired them. The second is to hire them as a permanent teammate. This is the more cost effective option, and lets you build them up into very effective Runners. You can have a maximum of two allies at a time-though you can also dismiss a Runner at any time, to free up room for a new friend.

Your teammates can be more useful in combat than a fully accessorized HK227-S SMG, and more useful outside of combat than a Rigger Contact with a helicopter. Choose them wisely, and use them well.

Ricky
Ricky is a Dwarf Shaman. Being a Dwarf, he has a very powerful body, with an extremely high maximum limit for Body and Strength (his legs aren't fast enough for great quickness, though). And as a follower of Rat, his magics are excellent for missions requiring infiltration. He's like a grimy little ninja. And for a Shadowrunner just starting out, he makes a very handy sidekick, for those first difficult Runs, before you can earn enough Karma to build up a decent combat skill. You'll find him in the Redmond Barrens, and it might be a good idea to hire him, to keep you alive.

Petre
Found at the Wanderer, in the Puyallup Barrens, this Dwarven Shaman can withstand a lot of damage in Cybercombat before flatlining at the hands of the Black Ice. The cheapest of the Deckers- sort of a fixer upper- hire him early on, build him up.

Trent
Trent is a Human Mage. You'll find him at the Space Needle, in Downtown Seattle. Same max stats as yourself, and magical power without the need for a totem. He'll give you a contact for free-Professor Jefferson. He only has a few basic spells, but they're all battle magic. He's weak... but cheap. If you hire him on as a permanent friend, he can be built up into something special.

Winston Marrs
A Troll Samurai, you'll find him in The Big Rhino in the Penumbra District. He's the best character in the game, for raw battle effectiveness and sheer terrifying power. This guy LOVES guns. But he's also a Troll, with a Troll's incredible Max strength and Body. That makes him a potential Melee fighter of incredible power. When fully maxed out and cybered up, he can destroy anything save the final boss, with a single well placed punch. However, as a gunfighter, he also shines, with his ability to soak up incredible amounts of damage without falling. Beware the god of War...

Phantom
Found at the Frag Grenade, in the Renraku Arcology, this guy is an Elf Decker. As an Elf, he has a natural advantage as a Decker- his Quickness can be raised to higher levels than any mere human. He also has some fairly good starting stats. Expensive, though.

Starting Cyberware: Datajack, Hand Razors, Wired Reflexes(1)

Walking Bear
You'll find this incredible creature on Council Island, in the Friendship Restaurant. She thinks she's ugly. That's debatable-personally, I think she has a statuesque, valkrie-esque beauty. That's a LOT of woman... er, Ork. Anyway, she's an Ork Shaman, which gives her max stats similar to a Dwarf, only her max Strength and Body aren't quite as high- but she can reach normal max Quickness. As a follower of Bear, she prefers the direct approach-she's a combat Shaman, with battle magics to protect-a she-bear defending those she cares about. She's expensive to hire... but she's worth it.

Starting Spells: Mana Zap 1, Mana Storm 4, Sleep 3, Heal Wounds 2, Confusion 2

Rianna
The most expensive and most skilled Decker, this pretty little Elf is a hot prospect for anyone looking for someone who can kick ass online and off, and look good doing it. Starts out with a Mach 22 SMG, which tells you how good a fighter she is, to boot. You can find Rianna inside the Matchsticks Club, in Downtown Seattle.

Starting Cyberware: Datajack, Smartlink, Wired Reflexes(2)

Freya
Freya is possibly the most beautiful of characters- bearing in mind that we're talking about a sprite here. More importantly, she's the most powerful of the mages, starting out. She starts out with two great offensive spells and NOT the relatively weak spells that some other Runners start with and will often switch to if you don't control them personally. Her defensive and utilitarian spells are the best in the game as well, though not maxed out. Still, she is the best in the game starting out... though if you've hired Ricky early on and built him up with you, he'll leave Freya in the dust.

Starting Spells: Mana Blast 3, Hell Blast 3, Super Barrier 2, Invisibility 3, Sleep 4, Heal Wounds 4

Ilene Two Fists
Ilene isn't the best Samurai in the game by any means, especially since by the time she becomes hireable, you'll no doubt have better fighters on your team. Still, she's fairly decent, as what the PnP version and novels refer to as a "Razorgirl," with her wired reflexes and hand razors- comes in fast and slices you up, rather than slamming into you with raw power, the way Winston Marrs would.

Starting Cyberware: Hand Razors, Muscle Replace(1), Wired Reflexes(1)

Stark
Stark was your brother's best friend, and will join you for free, for the sake of avenging Michael's death. He's a top notch runner, well suited for combat Runs, and a good trade in if you have one too many mages or deckers. Unfortunately, he can't be customized as fully as other Runners can - he's already cybered to the gills, so you can't do much with him except train him and equip him. Still, he's quite the catch...

Starting Cyberware: Cyber Eyes, Spurs, Muscle Replace(1), Dermal Plating(3), Wired Reflexes(2)
