Thanks to Chime the way to Pin dale is now open. (Before there was an electrically barrier.) The path to it is southeast of the Thunder Pig.
Directly east from entering Pinedale is Sterm and Melody's house. Pick up the wrench, and watch the scene. It seems that Merlin and Melody may be interested in each other. Too bad Sterm is a overprotective.
Cross the bridge east and follow the river's north bank to reach Casolari's house. It's past the Rainbow Gate i.e. golden arch and the tree stump with a heart carved in it. The wizard seems to be locked out and ask Merlin to find his Gold Key.
North of Casolari's house is a hedge maze with some useful items inside. Hedge Monsters will pop out every now and then. Just use the Stun Dust and Shooting Star. Be careful because the close passages make it easy to pin Merlin against a wall.
The maze isn't too hard to figure out. The key is in the eastern section.
In the northeast corner is another Heart Piece. Just walk through the wall to get it.
In the middle of the maze is a little courtyard. By the pot of flowers is a Rose, be sure to grab it. In the center is a fountain that gives clear water. Refill the bottle as needed. so heal up if needed.
In the western section of the maze is another false wall. Enter and follow the path for another empty bottle.
Go back to Casolari to return the key. Able to get inside he gives Merlin another task and a fish bowl. It seems that he would like a pet cave herring.
The best place to get cave herring is in a cave, so head back to the mine and use the wrench on the old cart. Pick up the wheel that comes off and head inside.
From the entrance head north. Climb up one ladder and head west as far as Merlin can go. Then head up another ladder, head west a bit, and then climb another ladder. West of that area is a another false wall that leads to a heart container.
Now directly west of the heart chamber is another false wall. Merlin will have to go around to get to it, but it is easily seen from the location of the Heart Container. This one leads to the final empty bottle.
Now directly south of the vertical broken track before the bottle room is another false wall. Walk through it and use the Balloon to get another heart container.
Now for the fun stuff. In the northwest corner of the mine is this cart. Get there avoiding the dwarves, using the balloon, and (if you feel lucky) by climbing into the "Danger" shafts. (Merlin will either find a random path to another shaft or be eaten alive by rats. (?)) At the cart use the Wheel on it.
The mine cart sections are the best and worst part of the game. Maneuver as best you can and cheat if you must. See Mine Carts for a map. Along the way is Heart Container on the track by a horizontal jump, as depicted. Get it before you finish the cart otherwise it is out of reach permanently.
The object of this cart is to reach the northern wall of the southwest corner of the mine. If you reach a long stretch of track to the west, past the first northern turn, and then Merlin is home free. At that point the cart will crash and reveal a cave.
Inside the cave is a flooded cavern. Merlin cannot fight enemies here so avoid them, since they damage or deplete his air supply. If Merlin approaches a grotto either a Mermaid or Piranha will appear. Kiss the Mermaid to replenish his air. The grottos are the same for each visit so remember where they are.
In the northwest corner of the lake is a light shaft like the entrance. Use the Balloon to exit the cavern.
This shaft will bring Merlin to the entrance to the Underground Palace. He cannot get across yet, but there is a useful Blue Jewel there. Grab it and back track to the Rainbow Pool. It will give Merlin the useful Air Bubble. There will be another Meanwhile scene, showing the Dwarves putting a guard here.
With the Air Bubble Merlin can now explore the lake more easily. In the northeast corner there is another Heart Container.
In middle of the western edge of the cavern, past some bubble jets, is another heart container.
In the south west corner of the cavern is a cave herring. The passage to it is blocked by a bubble jet. Wait for it to subside before crossing. Do not worry about equipping the fishbowl, it will be done automatically.
With the fish in bowl head back to Casolari. Don't faint while still in the lake, otherwise Merlin will drop the fish. In reward of his tireless efforts Casolari gives Merlin ... a Spring.
The Spring is used to vault across the gap in front of the Dwarven Palace. Before heading there make sure Merlin fills his bottles with Clear, Blue, and Rainbow water. These are found in the Tulip, Daisy, and Rainbow pools respectively. When Merlin gets across the Lady of the Lake will grant another password.
