Yan Fan can only be recruited before you attack Huang City. If you recruit him, another General will take his place during the battle against Huang.
Yan Fan is the other late comer to the team. He lacks strength and constitution, so he'll take a pretty good beating during battle. His WP is very high, but he is pretty much useless when it comes to attack. He is a good moon magic user though, but since he can only join near the end of the game, he isn't very useful since you should already have a strong team.
