Black is Herman's lost youth that was stolen by Forneus. The only way to get Black is to defeat Forneus with Herman in your party. If you don't have Herman with you when you kill Forneus, avoid him like the plague.
Black is absolutely amazing compared to what Herman was. He actually can hit and do large amounts of damage. Black also learns Axe wazas much faster than Herman did. Basically, Black is an all-around improved Herman.
